In 2017, Verizon migrated its customers’ Verizon email addresses to AOL, another brand that it owns and uses to provide email services. If you’re a Verizon customer, you can still use your old address but you must have migrated it to the AOL mail service, or it would have been deleted. Some Verizon customers who previously migrated their addresses to Yahoo can continue to access them through Yahoo, also owned by Verizon.
Verizon Email and AOL
Verizon provided its residential internet customers with Verizon email addresses for years, and they were able to use a Verizon webmail login portal or a third-party email program to access their Verizon email addresses.
But as of 2017, Verizon gave those customers the option of either migrating the addresses to AOL or extracting their data, potentially to save or to load into an account with a third-party email provider. Customers who did migrate their data can sign into AOL using their full http://www.verizon.net email addresses, such as email@example.com. They can do so on the AOL website or in its AOL app on a smartphone.
Verizon Email Yahoo Users
Some Verizon email users have already migrated their Verizon email accounts to Yahoo through a separate program. Those users can continue to access their email through the Yahoo system. Yahoo is now also owned by Verizon in its Oath division, along with AOL, and the company is in the midst of merging some of the AOL and Yahoo email infrastructures.
Third-Party Email Clients
If you want to access your Verizon email through a third-party email program like Microsoft Outlook or the mail programs on iOS or Android devices, you can do so even now that the email address is managed by AOL.
Grab the appropriate incoming and outgoing mail server settings from the Verizon website, enable the encrypted data transfer system called SSL – an abbreviation for secure sockets layer – and use your full @verizon.net email address to log in to AOL’s servers to send and receive mail.
Verizon customers setting up such access now should use the IMAP protocol if asked by their email programs, while existing customers who’ve been using the POP3 protocol may use either.
Other Email Services
If your Verizon email address was deleted rather than migrated to AOL, or if you’re not satisfied with the AOL service for any reason, you can set up a new account with a number of free providers, including Google, Microsoft or Verizon’s Yahoo. While you won’t be able to use a Verizon address with these other providers, you will be able to access your email through a Verizon wireless or home internet connection.
